A native of Minnesota, Dr. Holmgren received a Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry at the University of Arizona, graduating summa cum laude.  He was awarded his MD from the University of Arizona as well, and completed his internship and residency in psychiatry at New York University.  During residency training, Dr. Holmgren completed an additional year of research training using Diffusion Tensor Imaging to investigate the neurologic basis of auditory hallucinations.  He was one of 5 nationwide recipients of the APA/Lilly Resident Research award for this work.   In his final year of postgraduate training, Dr. Holmgren was selected as a Chief Resident.  

Upon completing residency, Dr. Holmgren ran the Recovery Clinic for individuals diagnosed with both severe mental illness and substance abuse at Bellevue hospital.  He later was the Chief Psychiatrist at the Postgraduate Center for mental health.
